Nam Nha Trang (Phường Nam Nha Trang, "South Nha Trang") is the southern of the four wards formed when the city of Nha Trang, Khánh Hòa province, Vietnam, was abolished in 2025. Item 52 of Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15 of 16 June 2025 merged the wards of Phước Hải, Phước Long and Vĩnh Trường with the communes of Vĩnh Thái and Phước Đồng into a new ward of that name, operating from 1 July 2025[1]. It covers 82.18 km² with 130,164 residents at 31 December 2024[2][3], a density of 1,583 people per km²[3], and is the second largest of the four wards by area[2].

The ward holds the southern seafront wards of the old city and, through the former Phước Đồng commune, the hill country south of the Cửa Bé estuary, where the Hòn Rớ fishing port lies[9]. Its administrative code is 22402 and its People's Committee sits in the Mỹ Gia urban area, Thủy Tú residential group[3][11].

Formation

Item 52 of Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15 reads: "Sắp xếp toàn bộ diện tích tự nhiên, quy mô dân số của các phường Phước Hải, Phước Long, Vĩnh Trường, xã Vĩnh Thái và xã Phước Đồng thành phường mới có tên gọi là phường Nam Nha Trang". The resolution took effect on adoption on 16 June 2025 and required the new local governments to operate from 1 July 2025[1].

The composition and the figures of 82.18 km² and 130,164 people were announced by the city on 24 April 2025, when a three-ward plan was replaced by one of four[7][8], and repeated by the provincial portal on 25 June 2025 together with the addresses of the new offices[2]. Unlike the other three wards, Nam Nha Trang's seat is not on an old central street but in a new urban area, Mỹ Gia in the former Vĩnh Thái commune, and its Party Committee in the Phước Long A urban area[2][11].

Territory

The ward borders Nha Trang ward to the east, Diên Khánh and Suối Dầu communes to the west, Cam Lâm commune to the south and Tây Nha Trang ward to the north[3]. Wikidata gives its point as 12.22667 N, 109.15917 E[5]. Vietnamese Wikipedia names Núi Cảnh Long among its features[3]. The Quán Trường and Tắc rivers run through Nam Nha Trang and Tây Nha Trang; in December 2025 the province was preparing a project to dredge and landscape them for tourism[10].

Most of the area is the former Phước Đồng commune, 56.65 km² in the former city's table, with Vĩnh Thái at 15.34 km², Phước Long 4.27 km², Phước Hải 2.56 km² and Vĩnh Trường 1.34 km²[6]. The five sum to 80.16 km², short of the 82.18 km² in the catalogue[2]; the sources do not explain the difference.

History of the constituent units

Phước Hải and Vĩnh Trường were among the 17 wards of the town of Nha Trang formed in September 1975, and Vĩnh Thái one of the seven communes attached when Decision 391-CP/QĐ of 30 March 1977 made the town a city. Phước Đồng commune was established on 27 March 1978 in a new economic zone, and on 19 November 1998 Phước Hải was divided into two wards, Phước Hải and Phước Long[6]. Those five units were merged in 2025[1].

Economy

The Hòn Rớ fishing port (cảng cá Hòn Rớ) is in the ward. When the provincial vice-chairman inspected it on 28 July 2025 for controls on illegal fishing, the port had recorded 16,361 vessel calls in the first seven months of 2025 and 23,454 tonnes of seafood inspected, of which 2,058 tonnes were certified for origin[9]. The ward is divided into 65 tổ dân phố and its website is namnhatrang.khanhhoa.gov.vn[3].
