Formation

Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15, adopted by the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on 16 June 2025, provides in item 50: "Sắp xếp toàn bộ diện tích tự nhiên, quy mô dân số của các phường Vĩnh Hòa, Vĩnh Hải, Vĩnh Phước, Vĩnh Thọ, xã Vĩnh Lương và xã Vĩnh Phương thành phường mới có tên gọi là phường Bắc Nha Trang". The resolution took effect on adoption and required the new ward to operate from 1 July 2025^[1].

The composition had been announced by the city on 24 April 2025, when a plan of three wards was replaced by one of four; the papers that day gave 97.03 km² and 128,239 people^[4][5], while the provincial portal in June 2025 and Vietnamese Wikipedia give 97.04 km²^[2][3]. The Party Committee was placed at 02 Trần Kim Hùng and the People's Committee at 744 đường 2 Tháng 4^[2][11].

Territory

The ward borders Đông Ninh Hòa ward and the sea to the east, Diên Điền commune to the west, Nha Trang and Tây Nha Trang wards to the south and Nam Ninh Hòa commune to the north^[3]. Its southern boundary with Nha Trang ward is the Cái river^[10], an 84 km river with a basin of 1,732 km² that reaches the sea at Cửa Lớn (Đại Cù Huân) by Xóm Bóng^[9]. Wikidata gives the ward's point as 12.281 N, 109.19 E^[12].

Most of the area is rural. In the table of the former city's units, the two communes account for 47.05 km² (Vĩnh Lương) and 32.44 km² (Vĩnh Phương), against 11.56 km² for Vĩnh Hòa, 4.48 km² for Vĩnh Hải, 1.70 km² for Vĩnh Phước and 0.67 km² for Vĩnh Thọ^[13]. Those six figures sum to 97.90 km², slightly more than the 97.04 km² of the catalogue^[2].

History of the constituent units

Vĩnh Hải, Vĩnh Phước and Vĩnh Thọ were among the 17 wards of the town of Nha Trang formed in September 1975 from the former districts 1 and 2. On 30 March 1977 Decision 391-CP/QĐ raised the town to a provincial city and added seven communes of the former Vĩnh Xương district, among them Vĩnh Lương and Vĩnh Phương. Vĩnh Hòa was split from Vĩnh Hải on 15 March 2002^[13]. The six units kept those boundaries until the 2025 merger^[1].

Landmarks

The Po Nagar towers (Tháp Po Nagar) stand on a hill about 10 to 12 m above sea level at the mouth of the Cái river in the ward, about 2 km north of the centre of Nha Trang ward; a wooden temple on the site was rebuilt in durable materials between 774 and 784, and the main tower dates from about the eleventh century^[6]. Hòn Chồng, a shore of naturally stacked boulders, is a scenic site of the ward^[7]. Nha Trang University, founded on 1 August 1959, has its address at 02 Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, Bắc Nha Trang^[8].

The ward is divided into 66 tổ dân phố^[3]. Through the former Vĩnh Lương commune it is the only one of the four wards whose land reaches the Ninh Hòa units to the north^[3].
