Tây Nha Trang (Phường Tây Nha Trang, "West Nha Trang") is the western of the four wards that replaced the city of Nha Trang, Khánh Hòa province, Vietnam. Item 51 of Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15 of 16 June 2025 merged the wards of Ngọc Hiệp and Phương Sài with the communes of Vĩnh Ngọc, Vĩnh Thạnh, Vĩnh Hiệp and Vĩnh Trung into a new ward of that name, operating from 1 July 2025[1]. The provincial portal gives 27.88 km² and 108,065 residents[2], Vietnamese and English Wikipedia 27.89 km²[3][4]; at 3,874 people per km² it is the densest of the four wards and the smallest by area[3].

The ward is the inland side of the former city: the valley of the Cái river, which divides at Xuân Lạc in the former Vĩnh Ngọc commune[11], the 23 Tháng 10 road with Long Sơn pagoda[9], and the Tháp Bà hot springs[10]. Its listed borders touch no sea[3]. Its administrative code is 22390 and its People's Committee sits at 480 Lương Định Của[3][13].

Formation

Item 51 of Resolution 1667/NQ-UBTVQH15 reads: "Sắp xếp toàn bộ diện tích tự nhiên, quy mô dân số của phường Ngọc Hiệp, phường Phương Sài và các xã Vĩnh Ngọc, Vĩnh Thạnh, Vĩnh Hiệp, Vĩnh Trung thành phường mới có tên gọi là phường Tây Nha Trang". The resolution took effect on adoption on 16 June 2025 and required the new local governments to operate from 1 July 2025[1].

The ward owes its existence to a late change of plan. Until April 2025 the city had proposed three wards; on 24 April 2025 it announced a fourth, Tây Nha Trang, with 27.88 km² and 108,065 people[7][8]. The provincial portal repeated 27.88 km² in June 2025[2], while both Wikipedias round to 27.89 km²[3][4].

Territory

The ward borders Bắc Nha Trang and Nha Trang wards to the east, Diên Khánh commune to the west, Bắc Nha Trang ward and Diên Điền commune to the north and Nam Nha Trang ward to the south[3]. Its Wikidata point is 12.27611 N, 109.165 E[5]. The Cái river, 84 km long with a basin of 1,732 km², reaches Xuân Lạc hamlet in the former Vĩnh Ngọc commune and there divides into two branches on its way to the sea[11]. The Quán Trường and Tắc rivers, which the province planned in December 2025 to dredge and landscape for tourism, run through Nam Nha Trang and Tây Nha Trang[12].

The former city's table gives Ngọc Hiệp 3.62 km², Phương Sài 0.83 km², Vĩnh Ngọc 8.53 km², Vĩnh Thạnh 3.51 km², Vĩnh Hiệp 2.66 km² and Vĩnh Trung 8.73 km²[6], which sum to 27.88 km², the figure of the provincial portal[2].

History of the constituent units

Ngọc Hiệp, Phương Sài and Phương Sơn were among the 17 wards of the town of Nha Trang formed in September 1975. Decision 391-CP/QĐ of 30 March 1977 raised the town to a city and attached seven communes of the former Vĩnh Xương district, among them Vĩnh Ngọc, Vĩnh Hiệp, Vĩnh Trung and Vĩnh Thạnh[6]. Under Resolution 1196/NQ-UBTVQH15, in force from 1 November 2024, Phương Sơn was merged into Phương Sài, leaving the city with 22 units, 14 wards and 8 communes[6][14].

Landmarks

Long Sơn pagoda (Chùa Long Sơn) is at 22 đường 23 tháng 10 in the ward; its predecessor, Đằng Long Tự, was founded in 1886, and the white Buddha on Trại Thủy hill above it, built in 1963, is 24 m tall[9]. The Tháp Bà mineral spring centre (Suối khoáng Tháp Bà), about 4 km north of the centre of Nha Trang ward, began construction in September 1999 and opened on 29 January 2000[10]. The ward is divided into 49 tổ dân phố and its website is taynhatrang.khanhhoa.gov.vn[3].
